One of the biggest problems with any sort of flood damage is
the fact that water is so deceptive and not all water damage is readily
apparent. In addition, while flood water
may look tranquil and calm, it may contain bacteria or contaminants that can
cause serious health problems.
A few flood cleanup tips to keep in mind:
You need to act quickly.
Water continues to cause damage as long as it is allowed to stand, and
molds or other toxins can appear as soon as 48 hours after flood damage has
occurred.
Always wear protective clothing when working in and around
flood waters; long sleeves, long pants, waterproof boots and glove, and
protective eyewear. Eyes, mouth, ,or any
open scratches or wounds can allow contaminants into your system.
Remove all furniture and loose items from the damaged
area. They can be cleaned up elsewhere
and will not present an impediment to any ongoing repair work.
Remove all excess water from the damaged area. Use submersible pumps or wet-dry vacs (no
electric pumps around water, please).
Open all windows and doors to get air circulating and rem
ove
moisture in the air, and use blowers and high velocity fans to remove leftover
water from surfaces or carpets.
Check basements and crawlspaces, anywhere you think water
may have been able to seep. Remove the water and dry these areas as well. You may want to contact a professional, who
knows all the little hiding places.
Failure to completely treat your flood damage problems may result in
more difficult issues later on.
