Water extraction is the process through which excess water
is removed following a water damage event.
It is the first step in the drying out and cleaning of any water damaged
property.
Water extraction is accomplished through the use of wet-dry
vacuum units, or by gas powered submersible pumps. Electrical pumps are discouraged for obvious
reasons.
The water is pulled from the area, flooring or carpet, and
ideally will be drained far away from the damage site, properly disposed of
through a sink or other drainage vent.
Once the water has been removed, surfaces will still be wet
to the touch. Secondary drying is
accomplished by opening all windows and doors to circulate as much air as
possible. High velocity fans, blowers,
and dehumidifiers can also be brought in to help in this process. Move the fans around every few hours to
insure total coverage and thorough drying.
It may take a day or so to complete.
Carpets may have to be taken up so that the flooring
underneath can be properly dried out.
Baseboards may also need to be removed to allow air into the various
wall cavities. It is of utmost
importance that all water damage be dried out completely. Failure to do so may result in the onset of
mold.
Mold can establish itself in as little as 48 hours following
a flood damage event, spread rapidly, and prove very difficult to
remediate. It can also bring with it a
whole host of health hazards, from mild allergic reactions to lung disease and
even death.
