Mold removal or mildew removal in your home may be fairly
easy to do, assuming the mold in question is not black mold or toxic mold, and
that the growth isn’t too big. Most of
us are familiar with the techniques we so often use in bathroom mold removal,
and the basics remain the same even for larger problems.
Mold clean up begins by shutting off the water or repairing
whatever allowed the water into your home to begin with. Everything needs to be dry to prevent the
return of mold. You should scrub off all
surfaces thoroughly with a water/detergent mix, allowing to dry completely. Other mold removal products are on the
market, but a simple detergent based solution will kill mold just fine. You may invest in other materials based on
your budget and mold removal cost.
You should avoid exposing yourself or others to mold. Wear protective clothing, long pants and
sleeves, rubber gloves, and a breath mask to filter out mold spores that may be
in the air. Eyewear is also suggested as
mold spores can irritate eyes considerably.
Some people try to paint over moldy surfaces. This is not wise. Be sure to thoroughly clean up the mold
before any caulking or painting takes place.
Paint applied over moldy surfaces will not adhere, at least not for
long.
If you are dealing with valuables that are damaged by mold,
it is advisable to turn them over to a specialist. This will insure that the best possible care
is taken to repair and preserve them.
