Floods can ravage homes in a matter of minutes, often times
causing more damage than a fire would.
In addition to the initial damage, homes can be torn apart by water
pressure and currents. Water is even
strong enough to alter a house’s very foundation.

Flood damage is salvageable, however, if you know what to
do. The best move is to take care of
problems before they occur, such as determining if your home is located in a
house flood zone and acquiring appropriate house flood insurance.
In the event you do find yourself on the receiving end of a
wall of water, some friendly flood damage advice to remember:
Shut off all electricity to your home, and wait until the
flood waters have receded before attempting to re-enter.
Evaluate the extent of the damage. Water continues to have adverse effects for
as long as it is left standing, so the longer your home has been sitting in water,
the greater the extent of the damage.
Remove all carpets and padding from your home as soon as
possible. Carpet that has been wet for
less than two days should be salvageable.
Wet padding, however, should be thrown out. You’ll also want to check the flooring
underneath for warping or cracking, and make sure it is dried and clean
thoroughly before reinstalling carpet.

Use pumps or wet-dry vacs to remove any excess water, and circulate
as much air as possible to facilitate secondary drying. You can use fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers
to help remove residual moisture.
Make sure all surfaces are completely dry and disinfected
before proceeding with any subsequent repair work.
