Of all natural disasters, flood natural disasters are the
most frequent and costly, responsible for as much as 90 percent of all natural
disaster related damage in the United States every year.
Floods can occur at any place, and at any time, and cost the
US just under $4 billion annually. An
average of 100 people are killed every year in flood related events.
The best way to defend yourself from a flood is to prepare
ahead of time, securing adequate flood insurance for your home or business,
having a pre-planned evacuation route (preferably one that leads to higher
ground!), as well as having a “go bag” packed with clothes, food, bottled
water, extra cash, a battery operated radio, whatever you need to be able to
live “on the road” for a few days.
When floods strike, evacuate immediately. Riding a flood out is a stupid move and could
cost you your life. Use your pre-planned
evacuation route to get to higher ground and wait there until authorities give
the all clear for you to return home.
Do not re-enter your home until you have surveyed the
structure for damage. Flood waters can
shift and alter foundations, making buildings prone to collapse. Shut off all electricity and gas before
re-entering. Electricity and water do
not mix, and you don’t want to be working in flood waters when the power decides
to come surging back on.
Document the damage with pictures and video, and then
contact your insurance company. You’ll
also want to contact your local water damage restoration company. Flood disaster recovery is a huge
undertaking, and best left to the professionals.
