Flood damage is one of the most common natural disaster
consequences in the United States.
Floods can occur anywhere, and at any time, laying waste to entire
neighborhoods and towns, and costing hundreds of millions of dollars to repair.
None of us should ever assume that we are immune from
flooding, but statistics show that only a small percentage of the population
has adequate flood insurance. This is
even true for states like Florida, whose residents face possible flooding as
the result of hurricanes and tropical storms for six months out of every year!
No, you can’t be immune from it, but you can take steps to
minimize the damage.
Know your flood risk.
Call your local emergency management office and find out about flood
zones and flood plains in your area.
Get flood insurance.
Not sure what else to add. Homeowner’s
policies do not automatically cover flooding, but coverage is available under
the National Flood Insurance Program.
If possible, make sure all electrical appliances, furnace, water
heater, and other devices are elevated at least 12 inches above projected flood
elevation.
Make sure your sewer system has a backflow valve. This will prevent sewage from backing up and
depositing all sorts of various and sundry goodies into your home.
You may also want to beef up sealer around your basement
entrances, or construct flood walls as a part of your basement construction.
No, you cannot prevent a flood, but you can minimize the
damage that it can do in your home.
To handle your flooding problems, contact a local water
damage repair company.
