How To Fix Water Damage

“How To Fix Water Damage” sounds deceptively simple.  There is no easy or quick fix to this sort of problem.  Water damage is truly the gift that keeps on giving, which comes in and does its initial damage, and then continues to drain and seep into every nook and cranny of your home, causing all sorts of additional problems if not addressed.

If you have experienced water damage problems, there are a few universal truths that you can use, and these apply equally well to spills both large and small.

Find the source of the water and shut it off.  But be careful, water always chooses the path of least resistance and sometimes what appears to be the source may be anything but.  If you are not completely sure, call in a professional.

You will then need to remove any and all excess water.  Use a pump system or wet-dry vac to extract as much water as you can.  Be sure to pump it out far away from your home, preferably through a sink or drainage vent.

Once that is done there will still be residual moisture left in carpet, surfaces, and the surrounding air.  Open all windows and doors and use fans and blowers to dry it up.  Carpets and area rugs should be taken up, dried out, then professionally cleaned and disinfected.  All surfaces should be thoroughly dried out before any further repairs are conducted.  This is to avoid subsequent problems such as mold and mildew, which can be health hazards if not treated properly.
