Basement flooding is almost as certain as death and taxes…..98%
of all basements will have water damage at some point in their lives. It’s inevitable…..basements are the lowest
lying point in any home, and water loves to run downhill. Draw your own conclusions.
Obviously, the answer would be to simply waterproof your
basement, but no basement waterproofing techniques are 100% effective, so your
best bet is to take steps to minimize any damage by catching problems before
they become serious.
Perform regular inspections of your basement to check for
leaks. Broken window seals, leaky pipes,
clogged up drains and downspouts…..fix them before the water is standing six
inches deep in your basement.
You can also install a sump pump or sump pit in your
basement; these are designed to filter out excess water before it has a chance
to back up and become an issue.
Basement flooding cleanup is much the same as any other
water damage repair project. You should
determine the source of the water and shut it off. You should also shut off all utilities to the
basement at their source.
Excess water should be removed by using gas powered
submersible pumps and shop-vacs, filtering the water out and far away from your
home. Open windows and doors and use
high velocity fans to facilitate drying, removing moisture from surfaces and air. Make sure everything is as dry as possible to
reduce the chance for mold growth. Mold
can establish itself very quickly and prove extremely difficult to eradicate.
