If I could invent a basement waterproofing method that was
even close to 100% effective, I would be a very wealthy man. Studies show that 98% of basements will
experience some form of basement water or basement leaking at some point in
their lives. So I would imagine such a
solution would be a very popular product.
Basements draw water like magnets, due to their position as
the lowest point in any home coupled with the fact that water flows
downhill. And there are other problems.
Chronically wet homes are linked to an uptick in the number
of respiratory problems, due primarily to issues with mold and mildew.
Frequent basement flooding can result in damage to the
structure that is not covered by insurance.
Insurance will see it as faulty maintenance and refuse the claim. Repeated claims may cause a rise in premiums.
Basement flooding wreaks havoc on property values.
You can of course take steps to minimize the damage. Check
your basement regularly for cracks in the foundation walls, broken window
seals, or leaky pipes, any of which could be the prelude for a basement flood.
Inspect drains, gutters, and downspouts, making sure they
are not clogged. Clogged gutters can
send water flowing into all sort of unwanted areas.
Install a sump pump or pit in your basement to drain off
excess water before it can back up and become an issue.
Many problems in basements may not be readily apparent to
the untrained eye, so don’t hesitate to call a professional to inspect your
basement for potential problems.
