Basements are prone to flooding for any number of reasons
due to their low lying nature. Heavy
rains, inadequate drainage, clogged downspouts, backed up sewers, cracked
foundations, broken window seals. It doesn’t
take much before you have a serious problem on your hands..jpg)
Basements also tend to be more humid than other areas of the
home, resulting in the onset of mold.
For that reason alone, basement flooding should be addressed as soon as
possible.
Basement waterproofing is one solution, checking to make
sure you have no foundational cracks, and fixing window seals and leaky pipes
as problems occur, before they have a chance to gain a foothold.
You can also install a sump pump or basement sump pit to
help filter out problems. See diagram
for a typical sump pit setup.
Check your landscaping; make sure the natural runoff and
drainage is adequate and doing the job.
Sometimes landscape work can change that dynamic, sending excess water
cascading toward your home.
Basement flooding cleanup is typical of most water damage repair,
extracting the excess water and removing it through a drainage vent or sink,
using air circulators such as fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers to remove the
remaining moisture from various surfaces, and making sure all surfaces are
completely dry before attempting repair work.

Check for deposits of mold or mildews and treat them
immediately. Extensive mold growth may
require professional services.
Finished basement flooding can prove more difficult, because
then you are dealing with higher grade flooring and carpeting, all of which
should be professionally cleaned and disinfected.
