A broken supply line/leaky pipe, a leaky roof, overflow of water from a sink or bath tub, and the malfunction of an appliance that carries water are some factors. There are two types of leaky pipes, one that drips slowly and/or only when water is passing through the pipe and one that produces a constant spray of water. Leaks that occur only when water flows through the pipe are difficult to detect because the water has a chance of drying. Leaks that provide constant sprays cause water flooding quickly.
A sump pump failure, seepage due to hydrostatic pressure, a broken down sewage system and water discharge from dish washers or washing machines are other factors that may cause water damage. Rising flood waters, storm surge or tides, flowing ground water and overflows from rivers or streams also cause destruction. Large piles of snow may melt suddenly and flow into a building.
Clogged drains such as gutters, floor drains, sump pumps, roof drains and sewer vent pipes can prevent water from flowing out easily. The water may backup and causes damage to walls and floors.
Leaks and cracks around windows and doors, improper roof drainage, cracks in foundation, joints and exterior walls allows for water intrusion. Poorly constructed and sealed bath and shower areas also allow water seepage.
