98% of all homeowners with basements will experience some
form of basement water damage at some point during their tenure as
homeowners. All to say, it’s pretty much
a sure thing.
It’s also a sure bet that whoever comes up with a foolproof
method of basement waterproofing will become very wealthy in no time. But until then, we have to live in the real
world. Basement water leaks are going to
happen, and at times they may be severe.
There is no way to totally insulate yourself from a flooded
basement, but you can take steps to minimize it. I’ve long believed that the best defense is a
good offense, so you should be proactive.
Check your basement regularly for anything that could provide water with
access to your home. Broken window
seals, cracked foundational walls, leaky pipes, clogged drains, malfunctioning
sump pumps, etc. Even the slope of the
landscape outside your basement could make for basement water problems.
You can also install a sump pump or sump pit in your home;
this will catch excess water and filter it out before it has the chance to
become a major problem.
You may also want to elevate appliances, electrical
switches, sockets, and power outlets to a higher level in your basement. Place them above any projected water level
that may occur. This sort of work should
be done by a qualified electrician.
For best results, contact your local, IICRC certified water
damage restoration company. They are
