A wet carpet can be an annoyance with even the smallest of
spills, but a large scale disaster spells headache. A big one.
Carpet not only gets wet but can absorb a lot of water very quickly, and
once that is done you only have about 48 hours if you expect to save it.
The first thing to do is to locate the source of the water
and shut it off. Secondly, remove all
loose items from the damaged area and keep foot traffic across the carpet to a
bare minimum. Use a shop-vac to vacuum
across the carpet and remove as much of the water as you can. You can actually get most of the water out of
your carpet using this method.
Once the excess is out you will find that the carpet is
still wet to the touch. It may even
appear dry, but your work is not done yet.
You should open up all window and doors, crank up the air conditioner,
if it is warm outside. If it is cold
outside, crank up the heat. Use fans and
blowers to help circulate as much air as possible to help dry out the
carpet. This process may take a day or
so.
If the carpet was thoroughly saturated, you may need to take
the carpet up and let it dry outside.
The reason? So you can treat the
floor underneath. You have to make sure
that all surfaces are completely dried out.
If you don’t, you will find yourself on the receiving end of a mold
problem.
