A wet or flooded carpet is a bear to deal with at any time,
even if the spill in question is small.
Any sort of water damage to a carpet runs the risk of leaving a stain
and producing a lingering smell. This
has a way of taking much of the enjoyment out of the carpet. Wet carpet smell in particular is one of the
more annoying problems you can have.
When it comes to carpet cleaning, you want to be very
thorough in your efforts, to make sure there are no additional problems such as
mold. Wet carpet mold virtually
guarantees that your carpet will be unsalvageable.
When drying wet carpet, you first want to remove the excess
water. In most cases, this can be done
through the use of a shop-vac or similar unit.
Go over the carpet several times, and this should remove most of the
water. Once the excess is out, you will
find the carpet, while no longer saturated, is still wet to the touch. You’ll need to circulate as much air as
possible to finish drying it all out. Do
this by opening all windows and doors.
You can also place high velocity fans and dehumidifiers around the
carpet to help the process along. If the
carpet was seriously saturated, you may wish to take it up at the tacks and
move it outside. Lay it flat on a patio
or driveway and allow to dry for a day or two.
Be sure it dries flat or it may not fit correctly when reinstalled.
While the carpet is drying, don’t forget about the floor
underneath. It will also need to be
dried, cleaned, and disinfected.
Remember that the operative word in this whole operation is “dry”. Everything must be completely dried out or
else you will have subsequent problems, namely mold and the toxins it brings
with it.
