When faced with water damage of considerable size, the first
conclusion you are likely to reach is that you cannot possible handle this all
yourself. The second conclusion,
logically, would be that you need assistance.
The third conclusion is that you really don’t have any idea where to
turn for said assistance.
Water damage contractors are a dime a dozen. Yellow book and internet listings in
virtually every city are replete with them.
It largely becomes a matter of choosing the right one for the job. Unfortunately the biggest problem is choosing
the right one for the job. Because while
they are in fact plentiful, very few of them are actually qualified to do the
work. There are no Federal regs to
govern who can and cannot do this sort of work, so pretty much any home repair
outfit, or even some yahoo with a mop, can advertise themselves as water damage
contractors. That’s when it becomes your
problem….hiring one of these guys could spell doom for your hopes of having
your house back to normal, at least any time soon.
A few questions you need to ask when considering who to
hire:
What are your hours?
Anything less than “available 24/7” is unacceptable. A reputable company will be able to have
someone out to your home even at 2AM on a Sunday.
What are your services?
The only correct answer is “all of them”. A reputable water damage repair company will
never subcontract out its work. They will be able and equipped to handle all
aspects of your particular needs, from water extraction and drying to carpet
cleaning, mold removal, even structural repair.
Are you IICRC certified?
The only acceptable answer is “yes”.
The industry has done an admirable job of policing itself through the
formation of industry leaders such as the Institute for Inspection, Cleaning,
and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the Restoration Industry Association
(RIA). Certification by these organizations
insures that the company has established standards of care and accepted
industry procedures for dealing with water damage.
