A wet carpet is bad.
A saturated carpet is borderline disastrous. If you have a wet carpet problem, it is
important to take care of it as soon as possible in order to save the carpet
and prevent mold and mildew problems.
First step is to vacuum the carpet with a wet-dry vac. Regular household vacuums are not recommended
for this purpose. You’ll just end up
buying a new vacuum cleaner.
If you’re drying the whole carpet, pull it up off the tacks,
throw out the padding and take the carpet outside. Place it on a flat surface such as a patio or
driveway to dry completely. You can also
use fans to help the process along.
Inspect the carpet for dirt, mold, and mildew. The carpet will in all likelihood need to be
cleaned, disinfected, sanitized, and cleaned again. Same goes for the flooring beneath. Remember that all surfaces need to be
completely dried out before any further repair work can be done.
Failure to completely dry everything will result in the
onset of mold. Mold establishes in as
little as 48 hours, and can pop up sooner in the event of sewage based
flooding. If you discover mold in your
carpet, your best bet is to simply throw it out and start over. Carpet mold removal is possible, but time
consuming and expensive.
