I am at a loss as to why anybody would want to take the time
to try and salvage a water damaged carpet, particularly if the carpet was
saturated. It is just far easier to tear
out the carpet and replace it with new.
Of course there are other schools of
thought, so I’ll indulge.
If you are the victim of carpet flood damage and you want to
save a carpet that has been inundated with flood waters, the good news is that
you can, provided the carpet has been wet for less than 48 hours, and provided
that the carpet was not saturated by sewage based flood waters.
First thing you want to do is locate the source of the water
and shut it off. Then you want to remove
all loose items from the area, such as furniture or personal effects.
For carpet water removal, also known as carpet water
extraction, use a shop-vac or submersible pump to remove the excess water. Which technique you use will depend largely
on the depth involved. You should be
able to remove most of the water with this method.
Afterward, you’ll want to open windows and doors, as well as
bring in fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers to remove the residual moisture. A digital moisture meter is invaluable for
determining when humidity levels are back to normal. Keep in mind that it may take a day or so for
things to completely dry out.
If you suspect that the water under carpet got to the
flooring beneath, take the carpet up at the tacks and lay it flat outside in
your driveway or patio to dry. Clean and
disinfect both the carpet and the flooring, and make absolutely sure all surfaces
are completely dry.
