Ever since my washing machine backed up and flooded the new
carpet of my new home on my second day as a first time
homeowner, I have been a
big fan of hardwood floors. That day I
learned firsthand not only what water is capable of, but also just how much
water one carpet can absorb. Carpet can
literally act like a sponge, soaking up vast amounts of water and adding a
substantial amount to its own weight.
I’m also a big proponent of simply throwing out wet or
damaged carpet and starting over. But
some people like the idea of being able to save their carpet and restore it
even after flooding events. The good
news there is that yes, your carpet can be saved, just as long as it has been
wet for less than 48 hours, and provided the flood water was not sewage based.
You’ll need to extract the excess water from the
carpet. Use a shop-vac and gently vacuum
back and forth over the carpet thoroughly.
This will remove most, but not all, of the water. Fortunately by this point, the carpet should
be dry enough to lift. Take it up at the
tacks and move it outside to a patio or driveway so it can lay flat to dry. Be sure it dries flat or else it may not fit
correctly when reinstalled.
While the carpet is trying, see to the floor beneath. It will also need to be dried and cleaned
completely…the operative word is dry….all surfaces must be completely dried out
before any further repairs are attempted.
