House floods are disastrous events on any level. Many people tend to underestimate the power
of water, and are usually quite shocked at the level of destruction that is
left behind when flood waters recede..jpg)
After a flood, it is important to begin water restoration
procedures as soon as possible. Water has
the ability to move houses on their foundations, so the sooner excess water is
dealt with, the better.
A little flood damage advice:
You should make sure the electricity is turned off and that
no water is left standing before re-entering your home. Wear protective clothing when working in a
flood damaged home (waterproof boots, heavy duty gloves, long pants and
sleeves).
Access the level of damage.
The longer your house has been sitting in water, the greater the damage
will be. Keep in mind that some flood
damaged homes may be prone to collapse, so check structural integrity.
Remove all loose items and furniture from your home. These can be cleaned and repaired
elsewhere. Appliances will need to be
checked out by a qualified electrician before using them again.
Remove carpet from the home to be dried out and
cleaned. Throw out all carpet padding;
once it is wet, there is no way to save it.
Open all doors and windows to get air circulating throughout
your home. Use a wet-dry vac or gas
powered pump to remove any excess water, then use high velocity fans and
dehumidifiers to remove any residual moisture from surfaces and the surrounding
air. Use a moisture meter to determine
when levels are back to normal.
