Floods are one of the most common and destructive natural
disasters in the United States, causing billions of dollars in damage to life
and property every year. Floods can
occur anywhere, at any time, and for a variety of reasons.
While you cannot insulate yourself completely from the
threat of a flood (unless of course you live on a mountain peak), you can take
steps to protect your home and valuables.
For starters, know your risk. Contact your local emergency management
office and find out if your home is located on or near a flood plain, as well
as projected water levels in the event of a flood.
Obtain adequate insurance.
The percentage of Americans with flood insurance is surprisingly
small. Homeowners insurance does not
cover flooding, but flood insurance can be had through the National Flood
Insurance Program (NIFP). Make sure your
home is covered.
Two words: higher ground.
No, you can’t move your home to higher ground, but you can elevate
bottom level items such as appliances, electrical boxes, important documents,
etc. Raise them at least 12 inches above
the projected water level. If possible,
do the same for all electrical switches, sockets, and power outlets. All work of this sort should be performed by
a qualified electrician.
Lastly, and this is important, have the number of a local,
IICRC certified water damage restoration company. After a flood is no time to comparison shop,
so do your homework now. Find one that
is available 24/7, with a full staff, and able to provide a full range of
service, from drying out to structural repair, to restore your home.
