If you are a homeowner, or a renter, or a borrower, or
whatever, you know that there are few things more annoying than a wet carpet. Even the smallest of spills results in a mad
scramble to get everything dried up as soon as possible for avoid unsightly
stains or smells. Major carpet water
damage only increases the difficulty level exponentially.
As with any case of water damage, it should be cleaned up as
soon as possible. Allowing it to sit
just increases the chance for additional problems, such as mold, warping of
floors, or swelling of drywall.
You’ll want to remove the excess water (as in water you can
see) by using a shop-vac or pump setup.
Gas powered pumps only, since water and electricity do not mix. Remove as much water as possible through this
process.
Afterward, you will find that the carpet is still wet to the
touch. You should use fans, blowers, and
dehumidifiers to remove all residual moisture from the carpet. If the spill is substantial, there is every
reason to believe that the water will soak through the carpet to the flooring
beneath. In that case, it is advisable
to take the carpet up at the tacks and move it outside to a patio or other flat
area to dry completely.
Treat the floor thoroughly as well. Dry and disinfect the floor, and make sure
there is no warping or cracking of the floor.
If there is, have that repaired before relaying the carpet.
Throw out any wet or damaged carpet padding. It cannot be repaired. Replace it with new. The carpet itself will need to be dried,
cleaned, disinfected, sanitized, and then cleaned again. It is important to be thorough.
