The solution for any sort of water damage in your home or
business is simple…..remove the water and dry everything up. Of course, when you’re standing in the six
inches of water covering your living room, that may no longer sound quite so
easy. It’s important to know where to
begin, and more importantly, who to call.
You should ideally start by locating the source of the water
and shutting it off, or blocking it, or plugging it, or whatever. This will also tell you exactly what kind of
water you are dealing with, if there are any contaminant involved, et al.
You should also shut off all utilities to the damaged
structure. This should be done even if
the power is out. Why? Because it will eventually kick back on, and
an electrical surge while you are standing in flood water is not the most
desirable of situations.
Wear appropriate protective clothing, such as waterproof
boots, heavy duty gloves, and eye wear.
If the water is sewage based, avoid any direct skin contact. Harmful bacteria can enter your system quite
easily through any sort of scratch or open wound.
Remove all loose items such as furniture, electrical
appliances and other personal effects.
If these have been damaged by flood waters, they will also need to be
cleaned and repaired, but it should be done elsewhere so as not to disrupt
repair efforts on the home. Remember
that electrical appliances should not be used again unless checked and approved
by a qualified electrician.
Flood water removal should be undertaken by a
professional. Contact your local, IICRC
certified water damage restoration company for help. They are on call 24/7 and can have someone
out to your house within an hour or so. They also offer a full range of services
designed to handle all aspects of your water damage restoration needs.
