A flood or other major water damage event can be an
overwhelming and traumatizing event for any homeowner. People tend to underestimate the destructive
power of water, and when the flood waters recede they are slack jawed at the
level of damage that is left behind.
Water damage restoration procedures should begin as soon as
the flood waters have receded. Time is
important, because water will continue to cause damage for as long as it is
allowed to stand, increasing both the time required to repair it and the cost
to do it correctly.
Before entering a flood damaged home, check the structure
for stability. Floods can literally
shift homes on their foundations, making them prone to collapse. Likewise, shut off all electricity and gas to
the home, and do not enter any flooded room while the electricity is still on.
Wear protective clothing, such as waterproof boots, heavy
duty gloves, long pants, and sleeves.
Eye wear is also suggested, especially if the water contains
contaminants (always assume that it does, just to be safe).
Remove all loose items such as furniture, appliances, and
personal effects. These will need to be
cleaned and disinfected.
Pump the excess water out of the home, then open all windows
and doors and place high velocity fans and blowers throughout the damaged
area. This will circulate air and finish
removing residual moisture from various surfaces.
Check floors for signs of warping and drywall for swelling
or other indications of water damage.
Don’t forget to inspect basements and crawlspaces….leftover water can
make a perfect breeding ground for mold, which can be a health hazard.
