Water damage can be
a problem even in the smallest of cases.
Think back to the last time you had a small spill, and the frantic
effort that went into rapidly cleaning it up and preventing an unsightly stain
or annoying smell. Now think of a major
flood washing
through your entire ground level, coating everything in a thick
layer of mud and debris. The level of
difficulty just went up.
When dealing with water damage, the first thing you should
do is locate the source of the water and shut it off. Not only does this prevent more water from
coming in, but it tells you what kind of water you are dealing with. Clean water is water which is uncontaminated
and will not present any threat to humans if they are exposed to it. Grey or black water have varying degrees of
contamination to deal with, and require more specialized care when
treating. They can cause serious illness
or even death if exposed to or consumed by humans.
You should always assume that flood water is contaminated,
at least to a degree, and dress appropriately.
Waterproof boots, heavy duty gloves, long pants, sleeves, and protective
eyewear are must haves.
Be sure the electricity is shut off to the home. Do this even if the power is out. You do not want power kicking back on while
you are in the water.
Remove all loose items such as furniture, appliances, or
personal items. Remove the excess water
using a shop-vac or submersible pump.
Open all windows and doors to facilitate drying, and use high velocity
fans and blowers to help the process along.
Allow at least a couple of days for everything to be completely dry.
