The basic concept behind any form of water damage, be it big
or small, is to clean it up and dry it out.
Water must be removed from the damaged area, and the area must be dried
out thoroughly to prevent the growth of mildew or mold. This sounds like an
easy process, and it is
simple at the core, but it gets progressively more difficult to accomplish when
dealing with larger and larger spills.
Because water will continue to cause damage for as long as
it remains untreated, water damage restoration should begin as soon as
possible. You should first locate the
source of the water and shut it off.
This will not only keep more water from coming in, but will also tell
you exactly what kind of water you are dealing with, how likely it is to be
contaminated, etc.
You should also shut off all utilities to the home, even if
the power is out. Remember to wear
protective clothing when working in and around flood waters. Waterproof boots, rubber gloves, and eye wear
are recommended.
The excess water will need to be removed from the property,
using either shop-vacs or gas powered submersible pumps (depending of course on
the depth involved). Most of the water
can be removed during this process, but not all of it. You will find that afterward, many surfaces
are still wet to the touch. You’ll need
to open windows and doors, and use fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers to fully
remove all moisture from the air.
Everything should be completely dried out before any repair is
pronounced complete.
